The Fame. The Betrayal. The Brick.

I step away from the blog post for a few days to change my bedroom’s submarine room into a Wii bowling alley (photos to come) in honor of my new Biskup print!  With this I turn my room into an art-centric room from a TV centric room.  With a new and improved art station I hope to have more time and space to work on some of my projects I hope to share and show here.

But more importantly is the events that have taken place in the past few days.  Last Thursday I participated in Dining Out for Life and was an ambassador for the Fifth Floor restaurant.  The choice of restaurant to volunteer was certainly not by chance as I figured I should check out a good place while raising money.  The place is beautiful (and has *cough* free wine for *cough* guests from 5-6 everyday) and after my shift they gave me a free dinner, dessert, and drink and was wonderful.  I had the Gâteau Basque - almond custard tart, cherries, almond milk ice cream aka Heaven on a plate which they had to serve me at the same time as my sea bass which became a little bit of an awkward race to eat the warm fish and the cold ice cream.  The ice cream and tart did win out for the record.  The reason I digress though is because it is not what happened inside (although I did meet a wonderful Canadian couple and architect) but what happened outside which is literally only 50 steps from the BART station I exited from.

In 50 steps I walked to the front door and happened to be asked for a lighter by a stranger when suddenly there was crazy screaming behind me and two women exclaimed:

“OH MY GOD ITS THE GRILLED CHEESE GUY.  OH MY GOD ITS YOU. DID YOU WIN? IS THIS YOUR RESTAURANT? ARE YOU A CHEF?!?!?!?!?”

This was literally said at the same level as someone who just got called down to the Price is Right and shocked me just the same.   This was also while I was dressed up in dress shirt and slacks AND tie and was still recognized.   My mom wouldn’t have been able to recognize me considering I don’t remember the last time I was in tie and all.  The conversation remained at a heightened level of shock and awe and excitement on both sides when I found out these two had been in L.A. for it,  tried my sandwich, voted for my sandwich, shared my sandwich story with friends, AND sees me in the streets.   I really would have doubted this story myself if it wasn’t for the fact that I gave her a Lefty Like Me business card and she gave me one of hers.  So here is the props my first SF Grilled Cheese fan.  Go support my Pervsera padre she has got some interesting stuff.

So there it is.  My first trip into the city since the contest and spotted in SoMa right after getting off the train.  Then AverageBetty writes a little food piece and gives me some props and some video love with her!  I definitely liked her sandwich recipes up there and hope to give them a test since she gets around the food block.  It was nice to meet a fellow foodie friend.

But if you watch her video closely you might see what problem has arisen on my road to success.  I never once thought the brick would go out and try and get attention on his own but that seems to be just what has happened.  The only zoom-in on average betty’s video is of the brick (it’s quick but it’s there).  Then there’s this!

The Brick with some other trick.

The Brick with some other trick.

I stumbled upon this on BoingBoing and realized the brick has already appeared to try and move on from his primary fame of being my sandwich making sidekick and now be a pal of pizzas everywhere.

I just want to make sure the record is set straight here and have everyone know that the brick was actually originally created for the purpose of making a grilled cheese sandwich.  The first bricks dug up by archaeologists were said to have been often times found nearby crust and cheese agates in caves.  Unfortuantely my Grandmother was not able to pass down her legendary brick to me as she told me it was lost in the second World War during a night ambush of a local grilled cheese party her neighborhood was having for the allied army.  The brick I use in my kitchen today has already made a journey from Florida to New Jersey and now has taken on some west coast flavor with my new hometown.  I am proud that the GCI allowed me a stage to once again share the story of the brick and it’s original use of creating such a spectacular melting of cheese and bread and butter that has satisfied the cravings of civilizations everywhere.

The good days with the brick.

The good days with the brick.

I guess in the end I’m happy the brick is having some time in the spotlight without me as I did this past week.  I can only hope one day soon the brick and I will hit the road again and put on our show to more hungry fans.  In the meantime I’m very happy to share a brick of a different color. And dimension.

Beautiful Game. Take some time alone....

Find the Brick. Move the Cart. Enjoy the Ride.  - This is the type of flash art/games I love and wish more people took the time to experience and enjoy.  Enjoy the bricks and stay tuned this week for some posts about the past including some pictures of the bounty of new Gama-Go booty I got at the grand opening in SF this weekend, some chat about the cheeses used in the competition, and reflection back to my little meet and greet time with Cousteau(‘s son!).

Happy May Day and May Month as it is definitely my favorite!

Sincerely,
