It has been a very exhausting whirlwind of a trip that had included tons of cheese and laughs, drinking and dancing, and winning and losing. I learned a lot from the Karma Sutra and feel the Ballsy Boy did pretty damn good, considering it also went up against MTV’s Robert Dyrdek and his Glee club that came to compete. I hear here really cared about grilled cheeses so mad props for that, but the rest of the show was a little too much for cheese-town. That and he mysteriously got front and center for him and his chaotic club. I actually got more of a chance to meet a lot of cool competitors, some I had even competed against in other cooking competitions like SF Food Wars.
Yet in the end it was the brick and his trick that took yet another trophy home to make 3 total trophies for this legendary sandwich. (2 firsts and the 2nd place yesterday in Missionary) Thank you all who voted for this sandwich and I hope to take some of the advice I heard out there about my sandwich and its serving so we can bring it back to the top next year. But luckily I got 364 more days to not worry about that. The Brick’s Trick did well and I will admit here and now that the man who beat me had a damn good grilled cheese (although if I mentioned the bread that beat mine……ppl would cry) and a damn good little cheese topping to go with it.
Beautiful day. Major crowds. Fun to compete against the MTV Glee Club. Awesome grilled cheese fans. Awesome after party.
1st heat should have waited until the crowds were in the pen before we started. 2nd row got shorted a bit. Award ceremony hella rushed because of some announcements that should have gone AFTER.
Great job Tim, Tillamook, and all those volunteers and people that make this fun ass event possible for the cheese chefs of the USA to come and share our creations. Thanks TT for teaching me the art, beauty, and simplicity of cooking. Until next time, there is always the Oakland Art Mur …….. ..
2nd place Missionary Man.
Brick’s Trick Maker
3 time winning cheese champion (and 4 if 4th places count)
Michael D
(Ballsy Boy was still delicious and gained some serious followers. Respeckt)
Mine was short, sweet, and kinda random just like I want this post to be.
I finally finally got my FLICKR pictures up but with no comments. Just note the cars you see are stuck on the sand hill they BOTH drove over. butluckily the benz was pushed aka rammed by a bentley and dented with nothing good coming of it. Love you LA! Check the pics out hereyhere.
I finally found the Food TV guy that competed against me. Since his not placing in the event speaks enough of his cooking skills I will congratulate him for making up with his fashion skills. Those rhinestone sunglasses ruled bro! Do want to know more?
I hope everyone has a super cinco de mayo as I plan on hosting a small par-tay at mi casa tomorrow so until next time here a spanish sensation just in time to celebrate the holiday!
I chose Missionary because the registration first said it was hardest to win.
I chose missionary because if you can’t show somebody you know how to do it well the normal way they’re not going to believe you got the skills to get wild with them. And I want to and I will cheese fans.
For now….I give you a slideshow of my way from the familiar East bay down the glitz and the grill marks of LA. As I said before, I wanted to go down to LA for the first time and leave the dream….a celebrity of sorts. I am honored and humbled by those who voted for me and can only thank my foodie family and friends that have always shared time with me over the pots and pans.
I hope to share some of the different experiences and very, very funny stories from the event in the days to come but first have to prepare for tomorrow night’s “Family Night”, a cooking Tuesday tradition among friends, which of course will be a grilled cheese victory party with everyone getting to take on the champ himself!
It will be nothing compared to the throwdown that was the Grilled Cheese Invitational of 2009:
Well I didn’t think I would be heading towards the cheesiest competition of my life and bringing you all with me but it looks like its that way. A brick(s) has gone from the backyard, to a kitchen, and now to the dance floor crossing coasts and coastlines. It’s reaches stunned me when I ran into a girl from my small New Jersey hometown calling out my name at Zeitgeist to tell me she remembered me from high school……….and as the grilled cheese guy! It’s one thing to be a San Fran Sandwich maker but to have someone from Jersey come give a friggin piece of their mind about my skillz then you know you got something.
The shirt is complete and prints are being printed but I am going to hold out on the release of the image until Earth Day in celebration of the green nature of my cooking technique (and so I can upload a photo of the final design instead of just say it). I have already scoured the East Bay area in search of 20 of the finest bricks to use only once with each sandwich down in L.A. I wonder if the other competitors can sleep soundly knowing what is coming. I hope I know what is coming.
To ease my tenses I will heading out to the Fox Theater tomorrow to get served a slice of the Fleet Foxes @ Fox Theater….thats a lot of sexy. If you haven’t already heard them they are like Akron/Family but more within the lines. If you haven’t heard Akron/Family they are like the Album Leafs but harder to understand. If you haven’t heard the Album Leafs well……..you should go find out about them. They lead to many other great bands.
I leave you with a trippy video I found while searching for the Akron/Family. Very appropriate for the holidays…..
Tomorrow should bring a review of my first fox hunt and some more cheese commentary.
And just like that President Obama nearly reaches his first 100 days in office.
And just like that President Obamii nearly reaches his first 100 days representing leftylikeme.com
Change has come in most unexpected places for them both. While I first thought something a lot sexier was going to come our way in the form of clothing lines it seems like this ones going to be a lot smarter. So smart most people have never even learned of the practice until it was unleashed twice now upon the masses of the East Bay. The first time it went practically unnoticed at 4th place…..the second time it drunkenly and stubbornly stood closely waiting for the megaphone ultimate victory and the mania that ensued. Brick! Brick! Brick! Brick! The people had learned, loved, laughed, and lived. But sadly some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. Today I would like to announce that I have registered for the 1st 7th National Grilled Cheese Invitational and will be bringing the brick to its rightful place. The legend of the brick will return to win the hearts and souls of all who dare taste it’s oozy creations. For this special occasion, I want to spread the knowledge and the power to everyone by creating a “The Brick is the Trick” limited print run T-shirt for the competition. I will be selling the limited edition T-shirt/Cooking Brick Combo @ the competition and hopefully locally so stay tuned! Each brick will be autographed and include a random sketch of one of the losing “Brick is the Trick” sketches hand drawn by the your lefty handed champ chef himself.
But First I need your vote! Please either leave your comment here with your top 3 fav (in order) or vote on facebook by joining the public “Lefties Like Me” group! (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=61413642539&ref=ts)

100 days……Wow. This site definitely has the wear and tear of 100 days of whirlwind work and cutting edge change all over the place.
So, as Obama is entrenched in a forest of economies, crises, levies, and bevies that he can barely see his way out of.
I will drive down for the first time to a land that has been cleared of all forest and paved with cheese, no trees, and plenty of fake titties.
I only got one line for tinsletown and its Kraft-y competition: I’m going to do what everyone dreams of doing…..drive in as an average cheese chef and leave a sammy celebrity!
The following is the piece of paper submitted with each grilled cheese sandwich to the fans.
Cheese Wars
Episode 2
Grandma’s Revenge
Over one year has passed since the Grilled Cheese Intergalactic entered the Oakland empire to seek out Cheese masters. The search had brought with it chaos to the area in the form of spatulas, well drinks, and sandwiches. When the war finally ended three rose from the Missionary category there were three chosen ones.Partying ensued.Yet there….was…another.
A young man had received fourth place and claimed his skills came from an ancient and powerful Grandmother, master of the cooking side.Learning from his mistake’s the previous year….the man set out to the GCI’s home location of Dolorescant.
The fromage is strong with this one…..
This is the blog about a lefty who could. Who could what? How about make the best god damned Grilled cheese this hipster hopping, foodie fanatical, green gala of a city called San Francisco had ever tasted. This was the 1st National (Regional) Grilled Cheese Competition of San Francisco, but would not be the last for a lefty victory as the one seen here.
